Cobham Aviation Services has extensive experience providing airborne surveillance operations using highly-modified aerial platforms.

We are entrusted with conducting and/or supporting airborne surveillance activities for governments and militaries for national security, law enforcement, environment protection and emergency response operations.

Fixed wing surveillance

Cobham is contracted to provide aerial surveillance operations for Australia’s national security, border protection, law enforcement, and environment protection. Under the World’s largest outsourced surveillance operation we patrol Australia’s 15-million-square-kilometre Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) under contract with Australian Border Force (ABF).

This turnkey operation deploys a fleet of highly-modified surveillance aircraft flying 15,000 hours and 2,500 missions per year, providing all weather, day and night coverage. The fleet of Dash 8 aircraft is fitted with a suite of sophisticated sensors fully integrated and networked in real time via high bandwidth satellite communications with the ABF command centre in Canberra. The modification and integration of the fleet was undertaken in house by Cobham in Australia.

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) surveillance

We recognise the benefits that unmanned aerial systems (UAS) bring to airborne surveillance operations and have actively monitored unmanned systems developments with the US Military and the US Customs and Border Protection Service.

We have supported defence trials of unmanned systems in Australia, been involved in developments and trials with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) and are an active participant in the industry body the Australian Association for Unmanned Systems (AAUS).
